IG Kanja tours Dabel goldmines amid reports of mine collapse

1 Mins read

Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, on Wednesday visited Moyale in Marsabit County on a fact-finding mission following widespread media reports alleging the deaths of five people after a gold mine collapsed in Dabel area on December 10.

Arriving in Moyale aboard the National Police Service (NPS) aircraft, piloted by NPS Airwing Commandant Mr. James Kabo, AIG, the IG quickly engaged local elders and security agencies to verify the situation on the ground. Contrary to earlier reports, it was established that no official complaints of deaths or missing persons had been filed as of yesterday.

The IG’s visit comes amid the Government’s ongoing enforcement of its decision to close the Dabel goldmines in response to safety concerns. A multi-agency security team, working alongside the National Youth Service (NYS), is actively backfilling the abandoned mine holes to prevent further incidents.

Addressing members of the local community, Mr. Kanja assured residents of the Government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding their safety and well-being. “Our priority is to ensure that no lives are lost due to hazardous activities such as illegal mining,” he reiterated.

The fact-finding tour was attended by top security officials, including the Regional Police Commander for Eastern Region, Mr. Charles Naibei, AIG, and members of the regional security and intelligence committees.

The Inspector General’s swift intervention underscores the Government’s vigilance in responding to public safety concerns while maintaining order in vulnerable regions like Marsabit County.
