Microsoft, through its Africa Transformation Office (ATO), has launched a groundbreaking initiative to accelerate the growth of artificial intelligence (AI) startups across Africa. In a strategic partnership with NVIDIA, this initiative aims to empower startups by providing them with access to cutting-edge AI tools, mentorship, and networking opportunities.

The announcement builds on the success of the Microsoft African Startups AI Fest, held earlier this year in South Africa, which brought together industry leaders, investors, and startups. The collaboration with NVIDIA Inception, a global program designed to support innovative startups, will enable African entrepreneurs to leverage Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure, including Azure and GitHub, to scale their solutions globally.

“We are excited to provide African AI startups with the necessary resources to thrive,” said Gerald Maithya, General Manager of Microsoft’s Africa Transformation Office. “Our partnership with NVIDIA Inception will help these startups overcome challenges, expand their customer base, and innovate on a global scale.”

Africa, home to over 2,400 AI startups, is emerging as a global leader in AI-driven solutions, thanks to its vibrant entrepreneurial spirit and growing tech ecosystem. Startups such as Taimba, Zendawa, and Pesawise are already making significant impacts in sectors like agriculture, healthcare, and finance.

Taimba connects rural smallholder farmers to urban retailers, improving supply chain efficiency. Zendawa is revolutionizing pharmaceutical operations through online access to medicines and financial solutions, while Pesawise is transforming East Africa’s financial landscape with secure, efficient payment services

Microsoft’s AI Startups initiative aims to further this momentum by providing technical and financial support to startups. For example, Kenya’s Snark Health uses blockchain to address healthcare payment challenges, while Nigeria’s Aibanc offers subscription-based banking services. Morocco’s PCS Agri enhances farm management through AI and IoT technologies.

These startups have already benefited from the Microsoft for Startups Founders Hub, which has supported over 14,000 startups across the continent.

The Microsoft Africa Development Center (ADC) in Nairobi will play a pivotal role in the initiative, offering AI training and workshops. NVIDIA will also host sessions focused on generative AI tools and compute resources, equipping startups with the skills needed to innovate and scale.

This partnership between Microsoft and NVIDIA represents a significant step forward in Africa’s AI journey, fostering a new generation of tech leaders ready to tackle global challenges.
