Nairobi, October 7, 2024 — The African youth’s pivotal role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was underscored today during the launch of the SDGs Week in Kenya, organized by the Next Einstein Forum (NEF).

This initiative aims to elevate the voices of young change-makers and encourage greater participation among underserved groups, particularly youth and women.

In her opening remarks, NEF Kenyan Ambassador and SDGs Week organizer, Eng. Grace Nzivo, emphasized the significance of empowering these groups to foster sustainable progress. “The SDGs Week aims to celebrate youth participation and leadership, inspiring young change-makers who are driving positive change in their communities,” she stated.

The event is set to unfold across urban and rural areas, particularly in Kajiado County, with the goal of sensitizing local youth and women about the importance of adopting SDGs at the village level. Eng. Nzivo highlighted that this grassroots approach is essential for promoting collective action towards sustainable development.

Eng. Erick Ohaga, Director of Nuclear Energy Infrastructure Development (NuPEA), officially launched the event and reiterated the critical importance of the SDGs in facilitating transformative change across various sectors. He urged the youth to embrace innovation and leverage technology to advance the SDGs, noting that the event offers a platform for showcasing diverse sustainable development innovations.

The SDGs Week is set to engage a wide array of stakeholders, including youth leaders, government officials, policymakers, civil society organizations, academia, research institutions, and women-led organizations. This diverse participation underscores the collaborative effort needed to meet the global SDG targets.

The NEF, as part of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), aims to bridge the gap between science, society, and policy in Africa. By highlighting the crucial role of youth, the initiative seeks to catalyze proactive change both regionally and globally.

As the event unfolds, it stands as a testament to the growing recognition of the potential of Africa’s youth in leading the charge towards sustainable development and social change. The SDGs Week is not just a celebration; it’s a call to action for all stakeholders to invest in the future leaders of the continent.
