In a media briefing following his swearing-in, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja made a firm commitment to combat crime and restore public trust in the police service. Surrounded by officers from the National Police Service, Administration Police, and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Kanja declared that he would not tolerate criminal activities and terrorism in the country.

Kanja’s statements came as he outlined his strategic vision for law enforcement, emphasizing collaboration with the public to enhance safety and security. “We urge members of the public to remain peaceful and to work with us,” he said, adding, “There is no space for criminals in our society.”

One of Kanja’s key priorities is to restore the image of the police service, which has faced scrutiny over allegations of excessive use of force. He expressed determination to uphold the rule of law and transform police stations into centers of excellence. “We are going to use technology to enable us to conduct our duty more efficiently and transparently,” he stated, highlighting a modern approach to policing that aims to enhance accountability.

In response to recent concerns regarding abductions, Kanja acknowledged that the issue has been a significant challenge. He noted that investigations are ongoing, particularly for Kitengela where several complaints have been reported. “Abduction is a criminal act, and we take these allegations very seriously,” he affirmed, ensuring that the police are committed to unraveling the mystery behind the disappearances of Kenyans.

During the briefing, DCI Director Mohammed Amin addressed allegations that his unit was involved in abductions, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability within law enforcement. “We are dedicated to investigating these claims and restoring confidence among the public,” Amin said.

As the new administration takes charge, Kanja’s promises signal a proactive approach to crime prevention and community engagement. The inspector general’s emphasis on technology and collaboration suggests a shift towards a more modern and effective policing strategy aimed at building trust and ensuring the safety of all citizens.

Kanja’s leadership marks a critical juncture for the National Police Service as it seeks to reclaim its reputation and effectively tackle the pressing issues of crime and public safety in Kenya. The public’s cooperation, as emphasized by both Kanja and Amin, will be essential in this endeavor.
