Aviation Union suspends strike for one week amid demands and new developments

1 Mins read

The Kenya Aviation Workers Union ( KAWU) strike originally slated for this Sunday has been postponed for one week. This decision follows a meeting at the Embakasi Social Hall where union members decided to delay the strike to allow time to read the documents presented to them by the government on the Adani deal and to review recent developments related to the deal.

The suspension comes in the wake of a significant meeting between union representatives and government officials. The union successfully secured the delivery of some signed documents concerning the proposed leasing of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to the Indian firm Adani Holdings.

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday KAWU Secretary General Moss Ndiema said the workers will hold a procession on Monday to KAA offices to demand more documents from the management.”

“We have yet to receive all the documents we demanded from KAA. We have only received a section of the document we requested,” Ndiema said

Ndiema addressed KAWU members, emphasizing that the strike would proceed if their demands are not met within the week.d

Moreover he demanded the immediate cessation of activities by any Adani representatives at JKIA. The union members have reported encountering individuals who appear to be Adani representatives, raising concerns about their presence and activities at the airport.

Additionally the union opposes any planned travel by its representatives to India for meetings with Adani offices, calling for a halt to such delegations.

The union insists that all stakeholder engagements related to the Adani deal be halted until their concerns are addressed and the rationale behind the deal is fully understood.

The union is particularly concerned about strangers at JKIA who have been issued temporary security passes. These individuals, who reportedly looks like foreigners, have been taking photographs and are suspected to be Adani representatives. The union is calling for an end to their presence and any related activities.

Ndiema affirmed, “If there are any Adani representatives at JKIA, their activities must stop immediately. We will also communicate to Terminal 1 on Monday to ensure that any unauthorized individuals are removed.”

The union’s action highlights ongoing tensions over the proposed deal with Adani Holdings, with members demanding greater transparency and engagement from both the government and the company.
