Kalonzo Musyoka takes over as official opposition leader amid Raila Odinga’s AUC bid

1 Mins read

In a significant political shift, Kalonzo Musyoka, the leader of the Wiper Party, has been declared the new leader of the Azimio Coalition, following Raila Odinga’s departure to vie for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship. This transition ensures continuity in the coalition’s leadership, which had previously been shared between Odinga and Musyoka.

Eugene Wamalwa, leader of the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K), confirmed Musyoka’s new role, stating, “There is no vacuum in Azimio. Kalonzo is the second highest-ranking member. He takes over.” Wamalwa’s remarks underscore the coalition’s resolve to maintain its leadership structure despite the changes. He further encouraged supporters to align with either the political factions or the broader Kenyan national interest, emphasizing the importance of upholding the Kenyan Constitution.

Musyoka, while supporting Odinga’s candidacy for the AUC position, chose to stay away from the official launch event held at State House to underscore his new position as the leader of the opposition. “I’m not at State House today because I want to show you I’m the official opposition leader,” Musyoka stated, reinforcing his commitment to his new role and assuring that “Azimio will not dissolve.”

The Azimio Coalition had earlier shown robust support for Odinga’s AUC bid during the launch event attended by President William Ruto and several African dignitaries. The coalition lauded Odinga for his extensive political experience, dedication to Pan-African ideals, and his proven track record in conflict resolution. In a statement, the coalition highlighted Odinga’s candidacy as a significant contribution to both Kenya and the African continent, proclaiming, “We are donating our best and most renowned leader to Africa and the world.”

The shift in leadership within Azimio comes at a crucial time as the coalition navigates the political landscape in Kenya, with Musyoka poised to lead the opposition as Odinga seeks to take on a continental role.
