‌The University of Nairobi (UoN) has been rocked by protests following the alleged abduction of its student president, Rocha Madzao. The incident which took place on Friday 23 , has sparked widespread outrage among students and has led to significant disruptions in the city.

According to the UNSA Secretary General, Ramesh Saxena, Madzao was reportedly abducted around 9 p.m yesterday by unknown people. He suspects that the abduction is linked to Madzao’s vocal opposition to the new university funding model announced on a national television.

In response to the abduction, students have taken to the streets, demanding the immediate release of their leader and voicing their dissatisfaction with the new funding policies.

The protests escalated when students blocked Uhuru Highway, leading to the deployment of anti-riot police. Clashes between students and police resulted in significant traffic disruptions and heightened tensions in the area.

The police have issued a 24-hour ultimatum for a report on the abduction, but the response has yet to be provided.

Witnesses reported that Madzao was initially confronted by an unknown individual who attempted to arrest him. However, Madzao managed to leave and later on his way home, he disappeared.

This sequence of events has further fueled suspicions and allegations that the abduction was orchestrated or sanctioned by authorities in response to Madzao’s protests.

Student leaders have been vocal in their condemnation of both the abduction and the new funding model. Saxena has condemned the actions, stating, “We urge all Student Leaders to remain vigilant in their informed resolve to reject the Universities Funding Model. No amount of intimidation or abductions can stop a people united.”

The protests have also highlighted other grievances, including high accommodation fees. Students are planning to demonstrate again on September 2 to address these concerns.

The situation remains tense as students and university authorities await further developments. The call for Madzao’s release continues, with students and leaders alike demanding accountability and justice.
