Christian Aid Partners with Faith Leaders to Promote Gender Equality in Kenya

2 Mins read

Christian Aid Kenya has launched a groundbreaking initiative to promote gender equality through a collaborative effort with faith-based organizations and civil society groups.

This 24-month grant project is part of a broader regional effort to advance gender-just macroeconomic policymaking in Africa, targeting countries including Kenya, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe, Burkina Faso, Malawi, Ethiopia, Burundi, and Nigeria.

The initiative is closely aligned with the constitutional mandate outlined in Article 27 of Kenya’s 2010 Constitution, which calls for affirmative action to address past discrimination and ensure gender parity. The focus is on the “Not More Than Two-Thirds Gender Principle,” a requirement aimed at achieving gender balance in elective and appointive public positions.

In July 2023, the Multi-Sectoral Working Group (MSWG) was officially inaugurated and subsequently established through Gazette Notices No. 10848 and No. 11090. The MSWG, formed by a diverse group of stakeholders from both state and non-state agencies, was tasked with developing a comprehensive framework to implement this gender principle.

The proposed framework encompasses legislative proposals, policy interventions, and administrative actions designed to accelerate the realization of gender parity in public offices. This effort follows a detailed consultative process involving a wide range of stakeholders, literature reviews, and comparative analyses of gender quotas from other African jurisdictions.

Christian Aid Kenya, in collaboration with CRAWN Trust and the Side-by-Side Faith Leaders Gender Justice Movement, is set to leverage the influence of faith communities to advocate for the principle’s immediate implementation.

The collaboration aims to raise awareness and enhance understanding among faith communities about the importance of gender equality and the Not More Than Two-Thirds Gender Principle.

Moreover this partnership is set to advocate and mobilize faith leaders to push for policy reforms that support gender parity and women’s representation in leadership. Capacity building will therefore provide training and resources to empower faith-based organizations to champion gender justice. Build partnerships between faith groups, civil society, and government bodies to drive gender equality.

The project will involve conducting awareness campaigns, workshops, and policy advocacy through meetings, forums, and media campaigns. Educational materials and toolkits will be developed to help faith leaders integrate gender justice into their teachings, while interfaith dialogues and conferences will foster broader discussions on gender equality.

The expected outcomes of this initiative include increased awareness and support for gender equality among faith-based communities, policy changes to advance gender parity, strengthened capacity of faith-based organizations, and enhanced collaboration between various stakeholders.

By uniting faith leaders and civil society organizations, Christian Aid Kenya aims to contribute to a more inclusive and equitable society, where women have equal opportunities to participate in decision-making processes and leadership roles. This initiative represents a significant step toward achieving gender justice and ensuring that the principles enshrined in Kenya’s Constitution are fully realized.
