Safaricom Hosts Cybersecurity Summit 2025 to Strengthen Kenya’s Digital Resilience

2 Mins read

Safaricom (NSE: SCOM) took the lead today in convening the Cybersecurity Summit 2025 at the Mövenpick Hotel in Nairobi. This was a big step in confirming its pledge to secure the digital future of Kenya.

With the theme “Powering Progress. Securing Growth”, the conference attracted leaders from companies, government officials, regulators, and experts in technology. These stakeholders deliberated on measures to strengthen Kenya’s protection against rising cyber threats.

The summit is a response to the increasing number of incidents of the cyber kind. The National Kenya Computer Incident Response Team Coordination Centre (National KE-CIRT/CC) reports that during the first quarter of 2025 alone, more than 2.5 billion cyber threat events were detected, which represents a very significant increase in comparison to the preceding quarter.

Among others, the most frequent malicious activities such as phishing, ransomware, and disruption of systems on a large scale, have targeted sectors like finance, healthcare, energy, and government services.

“Cybercrime is a menace that a single institution cannot eliminate by itself. Safeguarding becomes paramount as more Kenyans get online,” argued Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom. “The summit is an opportunity for the government, the private sector, and the civil society to work together and let digital growth in Kenya be the result of trust and resilience.”

Attendees participated in keynote sessions, panel discussions with experts, practical training, and lively demonstrations of up-to-date security tools. The program was a rich source of knowledge for the leaders, the IT professionals, and the entrepreneurs on not only how to protect systems but also how to encourage security awareness and the culture of inclusion.

The Safaricom Cybersecurity Summit 2025 is a milestone on its way to the next year’s event and goes hand in hand with Safaricom’s 25th birthday, a period which the company has been transforming human lives.

Safaricom in the year 2000 had only 17,000 subscribers, but now the company is serving over 60 million customers in Kenya and Ethiopia thus facilitating the inclusive access to communication, finance, and technology.

Safaricom, through M-PESA, Daraja APIs, and Cloud, is taking strong measures to secure systems. Besides these technologies, Safaricom is promoting the security awareness through initiatives such as Cybersecurity Awareness Month and the Capture the Flag challenge, thus making the security more user-friendly and empowering users to take their online safety into their own hands.

Moreover, Safaricom has been issued with the ISO 27701 certification, which is a mark of the utmost attention it gives to the proper management of data and the practice of securing information.

The Safaricom Cybersecurity Summit 2025 that encourages collaboration between the public and private sectors is a step forward for Kenya to be seen as a leader in the region when it comes to digital trust, innovation, and ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌resilience.
