The Project Management Institute (PMI), the world’s leading authority for project professionals, has announced the formation of a new joint venture with Green Project Management (GPM), a global leader in sustainable and regenerative project management.
Under the agreement, PMI has acquired a majority stake in the joint venture, which will integrate GPM’s sustainability-focused assets — including standards, guides, tools, frameworks, certifications, and learning materials — into PMI’s global learning ecosystem. GPM will maintain its research and advisory services and hold a minority stake for at least the next five years. The organisation will also contribute thought leadership and content to the new venture.
The move marks a significant milestone in project management, aligning with the growing global emphasis on environmental, social, and economic sustainability. According to PMI research, projects aligned with social good are nearly twice as likely to succeed, yet only 22 percent of current projects meet this benchmark — underscoring a major opportunity for improvement.
“This joint venture is about placing project professionals at the center of the sustainability transformation,” said Pierre Le Manh, President & CEO of PMI. “With GPM’s certifications and standards now integrated into the PMI organisation, we are equipped to help professionals turn intentions into measurable impact — across industries and at a global scale.”
Through the partnership, PMI will incorporate GPM’s GPM® P5 Standard for Sustainability in Project Management and the Sustainability Competence Standard into its offerings, empowering professionals with practical tools to measure and enhance the sustainability of their projects.
“Sustainability is not a luxury for Africa — it is essential to our growth and resilience,” added George Asamani, Managing Director, Sub-Saharan Africa, PMI. “This joint venture empowers African project professionals to embed sustainability into every project and lead transformative change.”
Since 2022, PMI has offered GPM’s Sustainable Project Management (GPM-b™) certification and integrated GPM content into its AI-powered knowledge platform, PMI Infinity. The joint venture deepens this collaboration and reinforces a shared mission to elevate the profession through sustainable project practices.
Joel Carboni, founder of GPM, emphasized the broader vision: “The future of project management must move beyond delivering outputs. Projects must generate prosperity, restore ecosystems, and build equitable communities. This venture brings us closer to making sustainability core to our profession.”
