Celebrated Kenyan gospel artist Betty Bayo has died after a long battle with leukaemia, her family has confirmed.

The “11th Hour” hitmaker passed away on Monday, November 10, at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), where she had been receiving treatment.

According to a family representative, Bayo was admitted at KNH on Friday after being transferred from AAR Hospital along Kiambu Road.

“She was suffering from excessive bleeding. The doctors tried their best, but the will of God has prevailed,” the family spokesperson said, accompanied by her partner and relatives.

Her death was also confirmed by her former husband, Pastor Victor Kanyari, with whom she had two children.

Betty Bayo rose to prominence in the early 2010s during the vibrant Kikuyu gospel music wave, quickly establishing herself as one of the most distinctive voices in the industry.

Her breakthrough came with the song “Eleventh Hour”, an uplifting track that struck a deep chord with audiences for its powerful message of hope, perseverance, and faith in God’s timing.

Over the years, Bayo built a loyal following with other popular songs such as “Gatho,” “Jemedari,” “Thiiri,” “Udahi,” “Ndîkerîria,” “Maneno,” and “Agocwo.” Her music often blended worship and real-life struggles, touching on themes of financial hardship, heartbreak, parenting, and spiritual doubt presented in her unique, conversational storytelling style.

Beyond her musical achievements, Bayo was admired for her authenticity and resilience, often using her personal experiences to inspire others to hold onto faith despite life’s challenges.

She is survived by her two children. The family has requested privacy as they prepare for her burial arrangements, which will be announced in due course.

Betty Bayo’s passing marks the loss of one of Kenya’s most beloved gospel voices, a woman whose music gave hope to many and whose legacy will live on through her songs.
