Emirates Marks 30 Years of Operations in Nairobi, Strengthening Kenya-UAE Aviation and Trade Ties

2 Mins read

Emirates, is celebrating 30 years of successful operations in Nairobi, marking a major milestone in Kenya’s aviation and trade journey. Since its inaugural flight in October 1995, Emirates has carried over 6.6 million passengers on more than 34,250 flights to and from the Kenyan capital.

Currently operating double daily Boeing 777 services, Emirates connects Nairobi, one of Africa’s fastest-growing cities to its expansive network spanning over 145 countries.

The route has become a vital link for both leisure and corporate travellers, with strong inbound traffic from Asia, Australasia and the United States, and outbound traffic from Kenya to destinations including China, Australia and North America.

In 2023, Emirates and Kenya Airways signed an interline partnership, enhancing connectivity and offering passengers one-ticket itineraries across East Africa.

The partnership has already benefited over 31,000 passengers, equally split between the two airlines, with top regional destinations including Rwanda, Tanzania, Mozambique, Malawi and Burundi.

Speaking on the milestone, Christophe Leloup, Emirates’ Country Manager for Kenya, said:

“Since launch, Nairobi has been one of the most consistently busy destinations on our African network. We are proud to play a key role in Kenya’s aviation, tourism and trade journey and remain committed to the destination for the decades to come.”

However, Emirates has also strengthened its presence on the ground with the launch of Africa’s first Emirates World travel store in Nairobi in 2024.

Located at The Cube, Riverside Drive, the store offers travellers immersive experiences, expert advice and premium services reflecting the airline’s global brand.

The airline continues to lead in passenger experience, being the only carrier in Kenya offering private, enclosed First Class suites.

It also provides generous baggage allowances, world-class in-flight dining, and a rich entertainment library with over 6,500 channels, including Kenyan films, TV, and music.

Beyond passenger services, Emirates SkyCargo has been instrumental in facilitating trade between Kenya and global markets. The airline operates three weekly freighters into Nairobi and carries significant cargo in passenger flights. In 2024 alone, it transported over 16,000 tonnes of fresh cut flowers, reinforcing Kenya’s reputation as one of the world’s top flower exporters.

Emirates’ contribution extends to employment and social impact. The airline employs over 1,100 Kenyans globally, including 254 cabin crew and 41 pilots. Through the Emirates Airline Foundation, the company also supports local humanitarian organisations such as The Little Prince Nursery and Primary School, Alfajiri Street Kids, and Starehe Boys’ Centre, funding education, meals, and art therapy for vulnerable children.
