DTB partners with Sun King to boost solar adoption in Peri-Urban Homes

1 Mins read

Diamond Trust Bank (DTB) has unveiled a new Solar Finance Product in partnership with solar technology leader Sun King, targeting salaried homeowners in peri-urban Nairobi with affordable financing for home solar systems.

The initiative allows qualified DTB customers to access unsecured loans for installing solar power, aiming to reduce dependence on Kenya’s often unreliable national grid.

Areas such as Kitengela, Rongai, Ngong, Juja, and Ruiru are the initial focus, where households frequently face high energy bills and repeated blackouts.

“Access to affordable and reliable energy is not just an environmental issue—it’s an economic and social imperative,” said Murali Natarajan, CEO of DTB Kenya. “Through this Solar Finance Product, we are helping homeowners cut electricity costs while supporting Kenya’s transition to cleaner, more resilient energy sources.”

Kenyan households have long grappled with surging power tariffs and frequent outages. Data shows that in the year ending June 2023, consumers endured an average of 44.9 unplanned outages, totaling more than 115 hours without electricity. Such interruptions disrupt remote work, daily routines, and small business operations.

By lowering the cost barrier to solar adoption, DTB aims to empower homeowners to take control of their energy consumption, shield themselves from fluctuating tariffs, and contribute to a more sustainable future.
