The Co-operative Bank of Kenya has announced a new suite of financial solutions targeting teachers, unveiled during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebrations held at Kasarani Gymnasium.
The bank revealed that its loan portfolio to educators has doubled over the past five years, cementing its role as a leading financial partner to Kenya’s more than 400,000 teachers.
Speaking at the event themed “Empowering Teachers, Building the Future,” Group Managing Director and CEO Dr. Gideon Muriuki outlined three major initiatives aimed at addressing key financial challenges faced by teachers.
The package includes preferential personal loan products with flexible repayment terms, an instant salary advance feature on the MCo-opCash mobile app for emergency access to funds, and a nationwide financial wellness program to support long-term wealth and retirement planning. Teachers will also benefit from savings solutions for their children through the Jumbo Junior account.
The instant salary advance feature was highlighted as a critical innovation, enabling teachers under the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to access part of their salary within minutes via mobile phone, eliminating lengthy paperwork and delays.
Beyond individual educators, Co-op Bank supports the education sector by managing Ministry of Education capitation accounts such as the Kenya Primary Education Equity in Learning (KPEEL) and Junior Secondary School (JSS) programs. The bank also finances essential school projects including buses, clean energy, and water installations.
Through its longstanding MoU with TSC, the bank facilitates salary processing, check-off loans, and school account packages, while also offering financial literacy training during teacher induction workshops.
The Co-operative Bank Foundation continues to complement these efforts through its scholarship program, which has supported over 11,600 disadvantaged students to date. In 2025 alone, 655 new scholarships were awarded to Form One learners covering tuition, uniforms, and upkeep.
“Our vision is to walk alongside teachers in every stage of their journey as professionals, parents, and community leaders. Supporting them is not just good business; it is an investment in Kenya’s future,” said Dr. Muriuki.
The World Teachers’ Day celebrations, jointly hosted by TSC and the Ministry of Education, brought together more than 800 education leaders and recognized outstanding teachers for their contributions to national development.
