House of Procurement, WRSC Sign MOU to Transform Kenya’s Agricultural Trade

1 Mins read

The House of Procurement (HOP), a Pan-African procurement and supply chain powerhouse, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Warehouse Receipt System Council (WRSC) in a move set to reshape Kenya’s agricultural trade landscape.

The agreement, signed in Nairobi by HOP Group MD & CEO Benard Odote and WRSC Acting Chief Executive Officer Lucy Komen, seeks to tackle some of Kenya’s most persistent agricultural challenges, including post-harvest losses, price volatility, and limited access to affordable credit.

Under the partnership, HOP and WRSC will promote structured trade and certified warehousing, providing farmers with reliable storage facilities to cut down losses and guarantee fair pricing.

By introducing transparent trading and aggregation systems, the initiative is expected to stabilize markets and ensure farmers earn equitable returns for their produce.

Crucially, the MOU will enable farmers and traders to use warehouse receipts as collateral with banks, SACCOs, development finance institutions (DFIs), and fintechs, unlocking much-needed affordable credit. This financial innovation is poised to empower smallholder farmers with liquidity to reinvest in their farms and boost productivity.

The partnership also envisions linking Kenyan commodities to regional and global markets, thereby enhancing export competitiveness and contributing to foreign exchange earnings.

Beyond trade, the collaboration will guarantee consistent food supply and raw materials for local industries, ensuring resilience against seasonal and climate-related disruptions.

The agreement complements national strategies such as the Food Supply Assurance Programme (FSAP), which aims to position Kenya as a continental leader in food security and agricultural exports.

By aligning the farmer journey with the crop journey, from planting to market, the partnership promises a transformative impact on Kenya’s agricultural sector, creating a win–win for farmers, buyers, and the nation.
