Safaricom PLC and PayPal have announced a strategic partnership to link M-PESA mobile wallets with PayPal accounts. By linking M-PESA and PayPal accounts, users will be able to transfer funds in both directions. Enabling easier access to global digital marketplaces and payments.
The service is already available to Safaricom M-PESA customers in Kenya, with future expansion planned to other M-Pesa-supported markets in Africa.
Unlocking Global Opportunities for Local Users
Esther Waititu, Chief Financial Services Officer at Safaricom, hailed the partnership as a key milestone in Safaricom’s digital evolution:
“This collaboration empowers over thirty-five million customers and two million businesses and micro-entrepreneurs across Kenya to participate in the global digital economy. It’s part of our commitment to unlocking opportunities and transforming lives through the power of M-PESA.”
PayPal echoed the excitement, with Otto Williams, Regional Head and General Manager for the Middle East and Africa, noting:
“Building seamless connections between the global economy and local financial ecosystems is crucial to expanding digital financial inclusion. We are thrilled to enable millions of M-PESA’s customers across Africa to connect more easily to PayPal’s international customer base.”
Supporting the Gig Economy and Financial Wellness
The partnership is expected to benefit Africa’s growing gig economy. With more freelancers and remote workers earning income from global clients. The ability to receive payments via PayPal into M-PESA accounts provides a reliable, fast, and secure solution.
The move aligns with Safaricom’s broader efforts to foster financial empowerment. Initiatives such as M-PESA Kadogo, which waives fees for transactions of Kshs 100 and below, and Ziidi MMF, which enables micro-investments from Kshs 100, are designed to build a culture of digital transactions and savings among Kenyans.
Driving Interoperability Across Fintech Ecosystems
The collaboration marks a notable step toward interoperability in the fintech space. It reflects a growing trend among financial technology providers to create more inclusive, connected ecosystems by combining their strengths and capabilities.
PayPal, with more than 400 million active accounts globally, and M-PESA, Africa’s leading mobile money service, transacting over $1.1 billion daily, form a powerful alliance that promises to transform digital finance for millions.
Future Expansion on the Horizon
While the service is currently exclusive to Kenya, both partners have indicated plans to extend the offering to other M-PESA markets across the continent.
This will further expand access to global financial services and strengthen the digital economy across Africa.
With this partnership, Safaricom and PayPal are not only redefining how money moves between Africa and the rest of the world but also setting a benchmark for digital financial inclusion in emerging markets.
